Falcon Support Services  Loughborough

We are continuing to support The Falcon Center in Loughborough by collecting clothing on our site. We delivered the clothing to the fantastic support centre on Thursday 16th July.

We will continue to support the center through this incredibly difficult time.

Please visit the charities website page to find out more on how you can support them: https://www.falconsupportservices.org.uk/

Meet the team: Mark Danvers

I have worked in the construction industry since 1981. I grew up in Zimbabwe and after leaving school there I got a job with the National Railways of Zimbabwe as a Pupil Civil Engineering Technician. I was awarded a Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering and after nearly 6 years at the railways I joined the Roads Branch of Bulawayo City Council as a Civil Engineering Technician.

I always wanted to travel and see the world. I decided to leave Zimbabwe, and after a journey that included Australia and Singapore I found myself “back” in the United Kingdom, the country of my birth. I worked as a contract draughtsman in a design office on and off for 18 months, interspersed with trips to Europe and America. After that there was another period of 18 months where I worked in South Africa, before returning once again to the UK.

I got a job working for North West Leicestershire District Council as a Civil Engineering Technician, which led to me being employed by Leicestershire County Council as a Senior Technician, and now as an Assistant Engineer.

I have worked on many different projects over the years, from small maintenance schemes to larger projects, mainly within the Highways sector. I have an interest in sustainable drainage too, with the opportunities that it offers to create habitats for wildlife and promote biodiversity. Civil Engineering as a career offers opportunities to be involved in contributing to the built environment, making a difference for people and how they interact with that environment. To me the job is always varied and it encourages innovation and “problem solving”.

M1 J23 and A512 Improvements July Progress

On the west side of J23, the Severn Trent Water protection slabs have been installed which is a major milestone on the project. Twenty reinforced concrete slabs each weighing 6.5 tonne were lifted into position to protect this sensitive water main. This allows us to complete the embankment works and subsequent road construction. (see the attached photo of one of the slabs being lifted)

On the east side of J23 we have laid close to 500 metres of kerbs for the new road widening. The majority of the surface water drainage has been completed and ducting for the new street lighting and traffic signals is progressing well. New footways are also being constructed. We have started top soiling the newly formed embankments as well. A new attenuation pond is also being installed to the north west of the new roundabout.

August promises to be a busy month for the project. Kerb installation will be significantly completed and the new roundabout will start to take shape. Lighting columns as well as the cabling will be installed. We plan to trim the sub base to its final level in preparation for the new surfacing to be laid on the west bound carriageway. We will also commence widening works on the M1 J23 slip roads.
